Gabions in noise insulations and walls
Because gabion walls are heavy and massive on the one hand, but porous and structured as well, they absorb sound waves very effectively and also offer possibilities for vegetation, e.g. climbing plants or sedum species. The application of a gabion is also very well possible in combination with traditional construction materials (glass, concrete, etc.). Also think about an additional absorbent core incorporated in the gabions.
Gabions in this form are also extremely suitable to be applied as land boundary, landscape element or garden wall.
Ecosystem
Noise barriers constructed in gabions do not only absorb the noise, they also serve as a greenable “Eco-wall”. A small, rocky biotope is a rare ecosystem and is able to offer a habitat to specialised flora and fauna. This multifunctionality also offers an efficient use of space and is therefore a thoughtful handling of another scarce commodity: space.
Spot-welded gabions
Spot-welded gabions are generally used for these applications. Spot-welded gabions have a rectangular or square mesh opening and are typically manufactured from ‘Galfan’ wire (steel wire with a pre-applied alloy consisting of 90% zinc (Zn) and 10% aluminium (Al)). The substrate for the application of gabions usually has adequate load bearing capability for a foundation onto steel, in which case a working surface of concrete or a layer of crushed rubble suffices.
Filling
The filling of the gabions may consist of crushed natural stone, crushed rubble, rejected bricks or other materials. Almost everything is possible, provided that the filling is frost-resistant. It is also important for the gradation of the filling to match the mesh chosen to prevent the filling from falling out. It is also possible to fill the gabions with soil, and in that case the gabions are cladded on the inside with a soil retaining fabric or coconut fibres.
In order for us to be able to guarantee optimum sound protection, we make use of a noise-reducing measure for these constructions. This could be, for example, an inner core with insulating glass wool or a concreteplex sheet. But it is also possible with a core consisting of soil.
